PWC Major Katie Robertson Speaks to Marhall's Rotary Club

On April 25, 2013, Katie Robertson spoke to the Marshall Rotary Club about her experiences with developing a book for self-publication on Amazon.com. Her book is titled: Tips for Earning Tip$: A Humorous How-To On Serving Meat, Mojitos, and "Minnesota Nice."

Congratulations to Janice Robinson!

Janice has been promoted to full-time greenhouse manager at Greenwood Nursery here in Marshall, MN.

Janice says of her new position that she is "planning gardening seminars for the spring, designing display areas, and working on marketing via social media. Believe it or not, a PWC education is perfect prep for managing a greenhouse!"

Congratulations to Dan Gilland!

May 2012 PWC graduate Dan Gilland has joined The Schwan Food Company. He started on July 9, 2012 as a Communication Project Specialist which is a marketing position within the Home Service division of Schwan's. Dan will be doing internal marketing, which primarily entails providing communications support to Schwan's nationwide Home Service sales team. Please be sure to congratulate Dan the next time you see him right here in Marshall.

Congratulations to Kylie Jacobsen!

Kylie is a Professional Writing and Communication (PWC) major who will graduate in with honors in May 2012. While a student here at SMSU, Kylie has been a recipient of academic scholarships such as the Oscar and Cora Sather Presidential Scholarship, the Academic Scholarship, Scholarship America, and Better World of Books Scholarship. Also, Kylie regularly made the Dean’s list, served as news editor for the Spur, was active in band, resident life, the writing center and student government, and had a piece of writing published in the Southwest Minnesota Online Writing Gallery.

In the fall, Kylie will be a graduate student at Iowa State University from whom she has received a teaching assistantship. With her advanced degree, Kylie hopes to eventually work in the health communication field. Faculty in the English department at SMSU have enjoyed watching Kylie’s growth as a writer and a student and wish her all the best in the future.

Congratulations to Janna Dorman!

Janna is a Professional Writing and Communication (PWC) major who will graduate in with honors in May 2012. While a student here at SMSU, Janna has been responsible for editing and maintaining both the Professional Writing major website and the Professional Writing blog. She has been active in the Honors and Campus Ambassador programs and has worked for the Residence Life Office.

In the summer, Janna will be interning for Select Evergreen Roofing, and in the fall, she will be a graduate student at Iowa State University from whom she has received a teaching assistantship. Faculty in the SMSU English department are  proud of Janna’s accomplishments, but Janna herself is quick to note that she is glad she started looking into graduate schools her junior year with the help of PWC faculty Drs. Henning and Bemer.

Congratulations again to Janna and best wishes to her for fantastic career at Iowa State! SMSU will miss her a lot.

Logo Contest

The Council for Programs in Technical and Scientific Communication (CPTSC) will be holding a Logo Contest for its journal, Programmatic Perspectives which publishes articles about programs in technical and scientific communication. The PWC major at SMSU is an example of just one of the kinds of programs that falls under this Council. To learn more about the Council and the contest visit: www.cptsc.org/pp/

The winner will receive $100. There is also the possibility for two honorable mentions to win $50 each. Logos should be submitted to Tracy Bridgeford (tbbridge2@cox.net) in JPG, GIF, and PNG formats. The best submissions will be posted on the cptsc.org/pp website. Winners will need to submit logos again in their raw format. The executive committee will review and vote on the logos.

Congratulations to Sandy Zeug!

Congratulations to Sandy Zeug who has accepted a position at Excel Chiropractic in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, after two interviews.

Ms. Zeug will graduate this spring 2010 with a Professional Writing and Communication degree from SMSU. Her duties as Chiropractor's Assistant (CA)include handling phone calls, appointments, customer files, and insurance information and dealing with each patient one-on-one. Since Ms. Zeug is still in school for this spring 2010 term, she is currently working part-time at Excel and is undergoing extensive company training. Once her degree and training are complete, she will be employed full-time with Excel.
